Finally a five star book!
I could not put this book down once I picked it up. It was everything I love in a book: comedy, drama, hate to love you, and really amazing writing. This was the first book I've ever read by Penelope Douglas. I've read a few Penelope Ward books and I thought that Punk 57 was one of her books, but after glancing at the book title again, I realized that I was reading a different Penelope book. .
I really enjoyed this story, even though it had a few of my book hangups. I'm not a huge fan of bullying, but I felt like the bullies were taken care of in this book. I also LOATHE the "C" word. It's one word I refuse to put in my books and if a author uses it more than a few times it's a major turn off for me. It's probably the only word I can't stand reading. Fortunately, it was only used once in the book and I was able to enjoy the rest of the book.
I'll talk more about some of my hangups down below.
From New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Douglas, comes the latest New Adult romance...
"We were perfect together. Until we met."
I can’t help but smile at the lyrics in her letter. She misses me.
In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.
It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…
And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.
Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.
We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?
Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?
F*ck it. I need to meet her.
I just don’t expect to hate what I find.
He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.
Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his phone number or picture or something.
He could be gone forever.
Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.
*Punk 57 is a stand alone New Adult romance. It is suitable for ages 18+.
I give Punk 57 five amazing stars!
Good news! I did not fall asleep once while reading this book! I read it in a day because I could not put it down. I loved it that much. I really love with the enemies to lovers tropes. I also love college and high school stories. I guess I've never grown up that much.
I picked this book up when it was free because the cover caught my eye, and I'm so glad I did.
Now, even though I gave this book five stars, there were a few things I DID NOT LIKE!
HATE: Ryen, she's a bitch, and even though she was written to be a bitch I did not like her morals throughout the story or how she treated other people. In order to stay popular she picked on weak people even though she knew it was wrong. I liked that Masen put her in her place and kept her grounded, but I felt bad for the people who suffered her wrath.
HATE: I also hated her friends, they were all assholes. A few of them redeemed themselves in the end, but they were still pretty shitty throughout the book.
LOVE: I loved Misha's bad boy character. He was angry and vicious but also had a sweet loving side to him that I love in a bad boy. I liked that he was broken and looking to fix himself and I felt for him after everything was revealed near the end of the story.
LOVE: Lyrics and the letters. Some of the lyrics didn't make complete sense or were in complete sentences but the emotions of the lyrics were really good, and there were some great lines throughout the book that I was like DAMN.
LOVE: The end letter from the author. There was one sentence in particular that hit home:
Just remember it gets better, you are important, and you can't be replaced. Hang on. You'll find your tribe.
I actually read this to my kids, knowing they were feeling out of place with their friends.
HATE: I felt the sex scenes were a little too graphic for high school kids. Even though it is labeled as NA some of the sex scenes in the book were too explicit for my liking. I don't really care about teenagers exploring ALL the positions. I'll let you figure out what I mean by that. There was one sex scene in particular that probably could've been edited out and it wouldn't have mattered at all.
HATE: I also didn't like how long it took Ryen to catch on to what was happening around her. It took her a while, but when she finally did, it was all worth it.
There were a few things in the book that happened that I nailed right away. I won't give it away, but a few of the big reveals, I actually had the thought... could it be? and it was.
Overall, even with the explicit sex scenes among teenagers, and the use of the "C" word, I still fell in love with this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes NA reads.
FIVE AMAZING STARS!!!!

This book fulfilled all three of my challenges
For the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge I picked a book that has at least a four star rating on Goodreads. I didn't know if it counted for a book with only words on the cover because of the spray paint in the background.
I also chose it for a book with a number in the title for the Nerd Daily reading challenge.
This book also semi-pushes the boundaries of NA because although Misha is 18, he and Ryen are both still in high school.
But the book is marketed as NA so it counts and I crossed off my O category by reading a book with a number in the title.
